Special Event Volunteers
Volunteer trainings are a great way to learn new skills or to refresh your knowledge after a long season off. Come meet new volunteers and reconnect with old! Trainings are mandatory for all new volunteers and open to all volunteers. Dates and details are on the calendar.
Volunteer Information Session
Come to find out more about volunteer opportunities with SPLORE! This event is geared towards people who have not yet had volunteer exposure to SPLORE. Past volunteers do not need to attend, but are welcome and should invite friends who might be interested!

Where: REI, 3285 East 3300 South
When: March 26, 2008 from 6-8p.m.

Disability Awareness Training
Join us for this one-night training if you have never volunteered for SPLORE in the past and you plan to this summer for climbing, canoeing, or camping trips.
**People who will attend the Volunteer Rafting Training do not need to attend this local meeting, but are welcome.

Where: SPLORE office, 880 East 3375 South
When: April 2, 2008 from 6-7:30p.m.
Cost: There is no charge for this training.

Canoeing
2008 Canoeing Training

Participate in this training if you plan to volunteer on canoe programs this summer and have not attended this training in the past. We will teach you how to load and unload canoes, launch a canoe, and basic paddle strokes. We will also go over some basic adaptations for people with disabilities. This training is mandatory for anyone new who wants to volunteer for canoeing programs.

Climbing
2008 Rock Climbing Belay Training

Participate in this training if you plan to volunteer for indoor and/or outdoor rock climbing trips and have not attended this training in the past. We will teach you how to belay and check you off on the SPLORE system. This training is mandatory for anyone new who wants to volunteer for rock climbing programs.

When: May 29, 2008 from 5:30-7:30p.m.

Rafting
2008 Guide Training (new volunteer guides)

Come to this training if you have prior guiding experience on white water rafting trips or have a desire to learn how to become a volunteer guide. These special volunteers actually row a boat down the river and through rapids with our participants. New and seasoned volunteer guides welcome, but space is limited.

We are also looking for experienced SPLORE guides to help train other non-experienced guides, so let us know if you can help!

Swift Water Rescue
Topics covered include:
risk management, self-rescue, z-drag rescues, safety gear, knots, swimming and high volume rescue. The course is taught by longtime instructors, river guides, and experts in the field.

2008 Volunteer Training Weekend

Join us for this overnight rafting training if you want to volunteer with our Southern Utah Rafting Program or if you plan to be a Volunteer River Guide for our rafting program. We will go over disability awareness training, how-to set-up SPLORE equipment and systems, and have a BLAST on an overnight rafting program! This training is mandatory for anybody new who wants to volunteer for the rafting program. Past volunteers encouraged to kick off the season with us as well and share your SPLORE experiences with new folks.

Where: Moab, UT (Launch at Dewey Bridge Camp Ground on the Colorado River; Take out at BLM Take out)
When: May 17-18, 2008
(You will need to be at the put-in at 9am on May 17th. We will be off the river around 3pm on May 18th)
Pre-requisites: Must be 50lbs or over to attend this trip
Cost: $80/person (The fee helps us break-even the costs of food, river permits, gas, T-shirts) The Price includes 5 meals, a T-shirt and volunteer manual. This is a Super-Fun training trip, too! Upon signing up, a packet with a map, trip itinerary, and gear list will be sent.

CPR and First Aid
CPR / First Aid certification is required for SPLORE guides, and highly encouraged for SPLORE volunteers.

We are offering two opportunities for this training to fit your schedule.

Two-part two evening class.
You must attend both sessions to receive both CPR & First Aid certification.

Both CPR & First Aid sessions are combined on this day.

Friends and family members are welcome. There is a limit of 16 per class.

Cost: The cost for this training is $40.00. If you already have one or the other certification, you may make arrangements to attend only the session you need for a cost of $25.00.

How To Sign-Up as a Volunteer on Programs
Click on the “Calendar” tab at the top left of this page and then look at all of the exciting programs we have scheduled. You will notice that some dates say that either “Program Volunteers” or “Volunteer Guides” are needed. If the program interests you and you’re available, call Susie at 801.484.4128 x 6 for additional information and/or to sign up as a volunteer.
Health and Liability Forms
We also ask that all volunteers (new and old) fill out our Health and Liability forms. We update our records every year so if you haven’t filled out the forms yet in 2008, please do so. You can print a copy of the forms by going to the “Programs” tab at the top left of this page and then click on the "Forms / Waivers / Maps / Gear Lists" link. You will need to fill out the Health Form as well as the Liability Form and mail or bring them to the SPLORE office.

Criminal Background Check
SPLORE’s policies now require that all NEW volunteers must supply SPLORE with a Criminal Background Check. Please contact Susie at 801.484.4128 x 6 for information on how to obtain this document.
