Make a difference as a SPLORE Program Volunteer!
Each year, more than 100 individuals are recruited and
trained to assist in SPLORE programs and special events.
Volunteers provide the essential support that makes it
possible for SPLORE to carry out its mission of providing
accessible and affordable outdoor recreation to people
with disabilities and special needs. Volunteers work with
SPLORE's dedicated staff to provide program assistance,
personal care, transportation, and fundraising support.
Volunteers benefit in many ways, including receiving hands-on
skill training in experiential recreation, meeting new
individuals, cultivating lasting friendships, and adding
value and new direction to the quality of other people's
lives. SPLORE introduces new volunteers to the various
program opportunities available each year through volunteer
orientations and volunteer trainings.
"It is a wonderful thing to see kids in their
twenties giving so freely of their time, energies
and skills. You are a unique group to care for those
who are not so physically capable as yourselves."

Volunteer Orientation is held each April,
and is a great way to gain knowledge and information regarding
SPLORE's history and philosophy, program goals and objectives,
policies and procedures, volunteer responsibilities, and
specific program information including types of activities
provided, populations served, and lesson/trip dates. This
is a wonderful opportunity to meet the SPLORE staff and
other volunteers! Please check the April calendar
for the exact location, date and time.
Volunteer Training is required for all
new program volunteers. The SPLORE staff will provide
you with the training you need to feel confident in your
role as a volunteer. You will learn outdoor skills, safety
procedures and how to interact with persons with disabilities
and youth at risk. As you use your new skills to help
others, your own life will be enriched as well. Your volunteer
experience will exceed your expectations!
Training for canoeing, climbing and skiing is conducted
locally and includes a program orientation session on
one evening and a program skills-building session on another
day or evening. Canoeing & climbing training is held
in May, and skiing training is held in December. Rafting
training is held over a weekend in May and is conducted
at the Fisher Towers section of the Colorado River near
Moab, including two days of instruction, river rafting,
and a night of camping along the river. Click on the "Volunteer
Training" link at the top of the page for the exact
training locations, dates and times for all programs.
SPLORE couldn't do it without our awesome volunteers!
| As of January 2005, all new volunteers will need
to provide a background check before working with
SPLORE clients. Please contact SPLORE to learn how
to obtain this report. |
