Board Of Trustees

Splore has a proud history of being led by experienced and esteemed members of our community. The leadership, stewardship, and focus of Splore is due in large part to these members. They are a key factor in why Splore has been such a successful resource for people with disabilities and special needs for over 30 years.

Executive Board

Carl Champagne photo

Chairperson Carl Champagne, CEO, Data Systems International

Carl is a hands-on private investor primarily in small, closely held private companies needing leadership to achieve the next level of success. He is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Data-Systems International in Salt Lake City, Utah. He also has experience with large corporations such as GTE/Verizon and Digital Equipment/Compaq, now Hewlett Packard. For the last 25 years, Carl has guided seven high technology and manufacturing companies through critical phases of turnaround and fast track growth. To each of these endeavors, he has provided the market vision, technological and business expertise, and vital leadership to the company's growth and profitability. Carl joined Splore in the fall of 2002 with the vision and goal of leading Splore to financial stability and national/international presence. Carl has a BS / MS in Computer Science, with advanced studies from the Sloan School at MIT. He is a private pilot and his personal interests include golf, wing shooting, collecting antiques and investment grade firearms. He resides in Bountiful with his wife of 40 years, Elaine.

Vice-Chairperson Stephen Coltrin, Officer, Irwin Union Bank

Stephen Coltrin received his undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona and is actively involved in the community. In the past, he has been an executive member of the Salt Lake City Boy Scouts Council, on the executive board for the United Way, as well as volunteering in various capacities for Junior Achievement and the Salt Lake and Murray Area Chambers of Commerce. He has been in the financial services and banking industry for more than 28 years, most recently as Senior Deposit Relationship Manager at Irwin Bank. Prior to joining Irwin Bank, Steve held a variety of leadership positions, including Branch Manager, Business Development Manager and most recently, Relationship Manager for Wells Fargo Bank.

Steve Addicott, Vice President, Caveon Inc.

Steve is a senior technology sales and marketing professional. With 17 years of industry experience, his career has focused on developing and expanding companies in the business services, technology, and enterprise software arenas. A hands-on leader, he is known for his very strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills. He has played instrumental roles in sales and sales management; business development; marketing; and customer service operations with diverse organizations ranging from start-ups to Fortune 100 companies. Throughout his career, Steve's efforts stem from his interest in playing a strategic role in defining how a business evolves and succeeds.

Matt Bambrough photo

Matt Bambrough, Art Director, Utah Valley State College

Matt was injured in a car accident in 1995 shortly after graduating from High School. He was diagnosed a C6/7 quadriplegic and was told he would never be able to live an active, independent lifestyle ever again. Being in a wheelchair has not slowed him down at all. Since being paralyzed he has served a full-time LDS mission, graduated from BYU with a Bachelor of Arts degree, married his high school sweetheart, completed multiple marathons and numerous 10k's, he works full-time as the Art Director at Utah Valley University, and has received multiple all-tournament awards in wheelchair rugby (Murderball), in which he is the co-captain of the Utah wheelchair rugby team. In his spare time, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons, Dexter and Ryland. He also enjoys downhill skiing, four-wheeling, public speaking, hand cycling & snowmobiling, as well as being involved in various entrepreneurial opportunities.

Hobson R.A. Calhoun, M.F.S., M.A.T., President

Mr. Calhoun has over 20 years of experience in administration and fundraising. This experience includes being a founding Board member of two nonprofits (Western Shore Conservancy for the Protection of Natural Areas, Prince George's County, Maryland; and the New England Environmental Education Association) and 15 years of experience administering three other nonprofits - Associate Director of the Rhode Island Audubon Society; Executive Director of The Neighborhood House, Northeast Harbor, Maine; and Executive Director of The Audubon Naturalist Society of the Central Atlantic States. Mr. Calhoun's education includes a B.A. from Yale University, a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Chicago, and a Master's Degree in Environmental Education and Environmental Sciences from the Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Currently Mr. Calhoun runs his own business doing real estate and mortgages in northern Utah. He enjoys yoga, kayaking, skiing, cycling & hiking.

Paul Carbone, MD, FAAP, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, University of Utah

Paul Carbone joined Splore as a board member in 2007. He practices pediatric medicine at the University of Utah. Paul earned his undergraduate degree in biology from San Jose State University and his medical degree from the University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School. Paul is the author of numerous scholarly articles and recipient of multiple research awards and scholastic honors. His commitment to disability issues is demonstrated by his participation on the Splore board and membership with Senator Hatch's Committee on Disability Issues, Utah Department of Health-Children with Special Needs, and the Utah Interagency Coordinating Council for Infants and Toddlers with Special Needs.

Hugh Cochrane, CEO, Villay Asset Management, Ltd.

Mr. Cochrane is CEO of Villay Assett Management, a London based investment advisory firm specializing in global equity investment as well as venture capital. Hugh began his investment career in 1997 focusing on initial public offerings, and later diversified into a portfolio of private venture capital investments targeting new and innovative technologies. He was one of the first investors in Pursuit Dynamics, a revolutionary platform engineering technology with applications ranging from advanced fire suppression systems to a novel bio-ethanol production technology. Mr. Cochrane is also a major shareholder and board member of Plasticell, Ltd., a UK based stem cell technology and regenerative drug-discovery company. Prior to entering the field of equity investing, Hugh spent a decade in the US apparel industry, where he held several positions including retail executive for Saks Fifth Avenue. Mr. Cochrane is a 1987 graduate of the University of Virginia. Hugh is an enthusiastic sportsman and outdoorsman with a lifelong passion for skiing, mountaineering, fly-fishing, wing shooting, and golfing. He is currently living in London with his wife, Alexandra, and son, Brandon.

Henry Deutsch - Director of Sourcing and Quality Control

Henry currently works for Ogio International, Salt Lake City, Utah as Director of International Sourcing, Customs and Quality Control. Over the past 20 years Henry has worked as a who's who in the outdoor and recreation industry including The North Face, Marmot, Frank Shorter Running Gear, Hard Corp Sports and Wilson Sporting Goods, Lands End, Eddie Bauer and Herman Sporting Goods, Ellesse, Hotfingers, and NFL. In this capacity, Henry has launched complete lines including headwear, scarves, gloves, shirts, socks, jackets, top's, underwear, fleece and gore-Tex. Henry has developed and managed budgets in the hundreds of millions, developed and managed all worldwide production, development, and logistics in China, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Mexico to name a few.

Katherine (Kathy) Durrans, Associate Broker, Prudential Utah Real Estate

Katherine specializes in residential and investment properties with a particular interest in historic preservation and renovations. She has over 14 years experience in the Salt Lake and surrounding area markets. She has an affinity for helping clients find the property that best fits their needs. She has also worked in the Airline Industry for over a decade in various capacities in Salt Lake, Boston, and Atlanta and traveled extensively in Central and South America. She attended Utah State University and the University of Utah where she graduated with a BFA. She has had several art shows in the area including a one person show at the Loge Gallery at Kingsbury Hall. Katherine joined the Splore board in 2000 after several years of involvement with the organization. She loves art in all forms especially nature, music, the southern Utah desert, traveling, adventure, and spending time with family and friends.

Hugh Ferguson, Private Contractor

Hugh grew up in Massachusetts, and came west for one year after getting his BA at Bowdoin College in Maine. He has lived in Colorado and Utah for the past 22 years. He previously lived in Breckenridge, CO skiing and working in the construction industry. For 10 years, he spent his summers as a guide for Holiday River Expeditions and first bumped into Splore on the river in the '80s. He now owns his own construction company in Salt Lake City, and is a step-dad to two teen-aged boys and daddy to his daughter, Lily.

Sarah Grant, Occupational Therapist

Sarah has been an Occupational Therapist since 1995 and has combined that knowledge with her enthusiasm and knowledge of the great outdoors. She has guided various outdoor adventures for people with disabilities via Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center, Wilderness Inquiry and Splore. Not only was she the Programs Director for Splore for two winter and three summer seasons, but in 2006 she rode her bicycle across the country, raising (at that time) the greatest sum of money for one Splore fundraiser in the history of the organization. She currently works for DDI Vantage, an early intervention program in Salt Lake City that provides developmental services to children age birth to three years of age. Sarah spends her free time playing in the outdoors, volunteering in Salt Lake for a variety of organizations or taking her volunteer work abroad to needy communities around the globe.

Chad Hymas, Professional Speaker, Chad Hymas Communications

Chad Hymas started Chad Hymas Communications, Inc., a professional speaking company designed to motivate business and corporations to "use their wings and reach seemingly impossible heights". Chad has raced in marathons and in the summer of 2003, set a world record by wheeling his chair from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas, a span of 513 miles. Chad joined the Board in May 2004.

Greg Miller, Area Vice President Sales, Western Region, Picis

Greg joined the Board in September 2007 to assist Splore in generating its next phase of growth. Greg is a successful sales, marketing, and consulting executive with 22 years of experience in enterprise software sales, marketing, and business process transformation, consulting in both start-up and Fortune 100 company environments. Greg is exceptionally adept at leading dynamic, high-growth environments, uniquely capable of developing deep relationships with client personnel from the Board Room to the Mail Room and helps companies creatively develop "big ideas" and transform them into actionable plans that deliver accelerated results. Greg has exceptional presentation and communication skills and is fluent in Business Process Transformation techniques and organizational process redesign. Greg's interests include family, skiing, cycling, the environment and making a difference in the world in which we live.

Steve Newton, Private Engineering Consultant

Steve and his wife Marie began volunteering for Splore in 2003, and Steve joined the Board in 2006. Steve has a Bachelors and Masters of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Michigan Technological University, and has been managing engineering and construction projects for 30 years. Steve and Marie are active volunteers because of the great satisfaction they get in sharing outdoor experiences with people with disabilities or special needs.

Tricia Petzold, MD

Tricia joined Splore as a board member in 2003. She is a family practice physician with the University of Utah outreach clinics, and works at the Snowbird medical clinic during the winter. Tricia earned her undergraduate degree from Georgetown University in Theology. Her residency in family medicine at the University of Utah brought her to Salt Lake City. Prior to medical school at Dartmouth, Tricia taught at the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School. She also taught adaptive skiing at the Telluride Ski School and was a ski patroller at Eldora Mountain in Colorado. Her interests include sailing, telemark and cross country skiing, road and mountain biking, and watching her daughter grow up.

Shane Sadler, Financial Analyst, Utah State Department of Insurance

Shane is currently a Financial Analyst with the State of Utah in the Department of Insurance and received his Masters of Public Administration from the University of Utah in 2007. Shane has many connections to the disability world. First and foremost, his second son, Harrison, has autism. This led to many years as an advocate and board member of the Utah Developmental Disabilities Council (UDDC). Shane was also employed for over three years as the contract analyst for the UDDC. Shane was surprised when asked to serve on the Board, but is also very excited because of the good experience he has had with Splore.

Claire Schupbach, Clinical Analyst, Healthcare Insight

Claire is a R.N. with a lengthy background in Clinical Research, including Business Development. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Northern Arizona University where she was on academic scholarship. Originally from Colorado, she has lived in Utah for the past ten years. The professional desire to enhance the health of the community in addition to a life-long interest in outdoor activities, nutrition and fitness drew her to commit to Splore's mission.

Advisory Board

Kimberly Dodson, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Westminster College

Dr. Kimberly Dodson is a past assistant professor in the Gore School of Business at Westminster College and Director of Graduate Technology Management Programs. Kim joined Westminster in 2002 and left to pursue private consulting in 2006. She brings experience in the areas of strategic management and implementation, integrated marketing strategy, and organizational development and culture change. Kim has additional experience in sales management, public relations, marketing communications, professional training, new product development and both qualitative and quantitative market research. Kim obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Utah.

Lisa Gerner, CFO, GMAC Automotive Group

Lisa Gerner received her undergraduate degree in Business Administration/Finance and Account from California State University East Bay. She has been in the financial services and banking industry for 25 years, most recently as CFO of GMAC Bank. She previously held various senior management positions with Citigroup.

Donna Liebrecht, Community Advocate

Donna raised two children, while working and achieving a bachelor's degree. She has been a Program Director for children from incestuous families and an advocate for those who have been sexually abused. When Donna was encouraged (physically forced) to go on disability because of multiple sclerosis, she began volunteering. Donna was trained as a chaplain and volunteered at St. Mark's Hospital for several years. She is involved with the MS Society in a variety of ways. Naturally, Splore became a passion for Donna after her first river trip. Her changes in physical ability and life experiences have taught her that there is always a possible solution.

Mary Ness, Prenatal Advisor

Mary has been involved with Splore for several years and is amazed by the magic that occurs. Mary has been a massage therapist for nine years and has a background working as a program coordinator for non-profit organizations. She is a mother of two fabulous girls and has a wonderfully supportive husband who allows Mary to take off time for Splore adventures. Mary was an active Board member from January 2004 to October 2007.

Erik Rolstad - Development Director, KUED

Erik joined Splore in April 2001 as Executive Director, and during his 6 years in this position, he achieved great success in transitioning Splore into a more focused and financially stable organization. In May 2007, he accepted his current position with KUED while also becoming a Splore board member. Erik was raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico and earned his bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. He has a Master's Degree in Social Work from New Mexico State University. During the 14 years before Splore, Erik worked with programs in experiential education, public schools, social work and wilderness adventure. He is an avid climber, boater and backcountry traveler. Erik enjoys sculpting and woodworking. He and his wife, Jill, are the parents of three boys - Riley, Zack and Kristopher.
